How TextProof works

There are three ways to bring a conversation in, and all of them happen entirely on your iPhone: import it from Apple's Messages app, send TextProof a WhatsApp export, or record your screen while you scroll through the chat.

Import from Messages

New in version 1.0.3, and it needs iOS 26.4 or later. On an older iPhone, use a screen recording instead. Set it up once:

  1. Add the Shortcut. Tap Add the Shortcut. Apple's Shortcuts app opens: tap Add Shortcut, then come back to TextProof.
  2. Allow notifications. TextProof sends itself a notification, titled "TextProof", purely so the Shortcut's automation can start it quietly while you stay in the app. It also shows a banner when an import finishes. These notifications are made on your phone and never come from a server.
  3. Turn on the automation. Open the Shortcuts app, tap Automation, and switch on "When I get a notification from TextProof". It arrives switched off.

After that, tap Find my chats, pick the conversation, choose the dates (one week, one month, one year, or your own) and tap Start import. A panel on your Lock Screen shows the days as they are checked, and the document says how many were checked, for example "30 of 30 days checked".

"The Shortcut didn't start". Either its automation is switched off, or the Shortcut has been deleted. Open the Shortcuts app and tap Automation: "When I get a notification from TextProof" should be there and switched on. If you removed the Shortcut and added it again, check this anyway, because adding it again can switch the automation off. Notifications for TextProof also need to be allowed, in Settings › Notifications › TextProof.

"No messages with [name] in those dates". Messages had nothing from that chat in the dates you chose. Try a longer range, or check you picked the right conversation.

A chat is missing from the list. The list of chats is fetched fresh from Messages every time you tap Find my chats, so it is always up to date. If the chat you want is an older one, tap Show older chats.

Import from WhatsApp

  1. Export the chat. In WhatsApp, open the chat, tap the name at the top, then Export chat. Choose Attach media to include the names of photos and videos.
  2. Send it to TextProof. Tap TextProof in the share menu. It opens with the chat loaded and asks which person is you.

Every message comes across with its date and time exactly as WhatsApp recorded them.

Import a screen recording

For any other app, or an iPhone older than iOS 26.4, film yourself scrolling through the conversation and TextProof reads the text out of the recording, entirely on your iPhone. You can pick screenshots instead of a video.

  1. Add the record button, once. Settings → Control Centre → More Controls → tap the green + beside Screen Recording.
  2. Start recording. Open the conversation, scroll to the top of it, swipe down from the top-right corner, and tap the record button.
  3. Scroll slowly — about one screen every two seconds — down to the newest message you need.
  4. Stop and import. Tap the red pill at the top of the screen, then Stop. Open TextProof and tap Import a recording.

Common questions

Some messages are missing. Scrolling too fast is the usual cause. TextProof marks any place it could not be sure it captured everything, rather than quietly skipping it — re-record that section more slowly and import it again.

A message is on the wrong side. Tap the message on the review screen and choose "Switch sender". You can also correct the text or delete anything that is not a message, and Undo takes back the last change. Anything you corrected is marked "corrected by device owner" in the document.

There are no times on my messages. Messages hides them until you ask. While recording, drag the conversation to the left and hold — the times appear down the right-hand side. Without that, your document still shows every date separator that was on screen.

I recorded the wrong screen. If the recording shows your list of conversations rather than the conversation itself, TextProof will not find any messages. Open the conversation first, then start recording.

I paid but the app still shows a preview. Open Settings inside the app and tap "Restore previous purchase". Make sure you are signed in with the same Apple ID you bought it with.

Photos and GIFs. From Messages, photos sent in the chat are printed in the PDF (in a chat with a great many photos, the later ones are named instead). From a screen recording, the pictures themselves are not reproduced, but TextProof marks the place where one was sent so nothing is silently missing from your document.

Reactions. From Messages, a reaction is shown as a reaction, for example 👍 Like or 😂 Haha, never as words somebody typed. A reply shows the message it answered.

Your privacy

Everything happens on your iPhone. Your recordings, messages and transcripts are never uploaded — TextProof has no servers, no accounts and no analytics, and works in aeroplane mode. Full details in the privacy policy.

A note on using your export

Keep the original alongside any document you produce, whether that is the chat in Messages, the WhatsApp export or the screen recording. It is the primary record, and the export is a working copy of it. From a recording, times and dates appear only where they were visible on screen; TextProof never invents them. Whether a document can be used in any formal process is always a decision for the people running that process.
